For almost 20 years, dogs have been making a splash at the “Paws at the Pool” event in Coral Gables. The annual event takes place at the Venetian Pool, aiming to bring community members together to enjoy a day under the sun with their furry friends.
The historic Venetian Pool opened in Coral Gables in 1924 and has been one of the most iconic attractions in the ‘City Beautiful’ since then. “It allows everyone to get together and travel back in time... you go back and see this hidden gem that’s here, that is pretty, and we can swim in it and enjoy it,” said Jose Vilar, City of Coral Gables Venetian Pool Aquatics Supervisor. The Venetian Pool is the only swimming pool in the country included in the National Register of Historic Places.
The dogs in attendance had a real treat, and not just dog treats. Owners and their pets from all over South Florida could come and enjoy the pool that is almost a century old. “It’s open to the public, so anyone, you just have to purchase your ticket online and come with a dog,” said Jose Vilar.
One Coral Gables resident, Edie Eisenberg, participated in the event with her dog Snuffles, who was born blind. “He hasn't really had a chance to swim, so we wanted to give him that opportunity and meet other dogs, so we brought him in,” said Edie Eisenberg. This event is special because it allows owners to connect with their dogs by jumping in the pool, swimming, playing catch in the water, and allowing a special bond to increase that is not on land.
Next year’s event will be at the same place and the same time of year. The entrance fee is $7.00 for dogs, and $5.00 for humans. All South Florida community members and their dogs are invited to join the fun again in Oct. 2024. For humans who want to enjoy the pool more than once a year, the Venetian Pool is open year-round to the public.
